• The Lorax came into theatres to celebrate Dr. Suess’s birthday

    Posted by Staff at 4/4/2012

1 On March 2, The Lorax came into theatres to celebrate Dr. Suess’s birthday. According to Fandango, its synopsis is: “Dr. Seuss' classic, environmentally themed children's book comes to the big screen in this tale of a young boy who encounters a cantankerous forest creature after venturing outside of his artificial city in search of a tree. Ted (voice of Zac Efron) lives in a town where nothing is quite as it appears; everything is plastic, including the plants. Hopelessly smitten by the beautiful Audrey (voice of Taylor Swift), who dreams of one day seeing a real tree, Ted boldly leaves the city determined to find the flora and grant her wish. Along the way, the young adventurer crosses paths with the Lorax (voice of Danny DeVito), a diminutive, mustached defender of nature who doesn't take kindly to human intruders. The better Ted gets to know the Lorax, however, the more he learns that his newfound friend has good reason for being a bit surly.” Critics announced the movie as, “so-so,” but as a fan, I say, “go.” Why not? Is target audience is mostly young children, but the atmosphere of the movie was great. The animation, a little singing, and the one antagonist who everybody hates, make the movie. It is also a great movie because it discreetly tells kids about trees and how good they are. It basically advertises to let trees grow. I recommend this movie for younger children, or anybody who likes a good, clean plot.

  • Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Movie Review

    Posted by Staff at 4/4/2012
1 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was one of the most interesting and entertaining movie this generation has yet to see. Throughout this movie a young Swedish girl, who is an amazing investigator for someone of her age, has to try and help an older reporter find out what happened to a long lost relative of his friend. The movie and the book tell different stories that share a common story line, but end in a different dramatic way. Lisbeth Salander, the young female reporter, struggles through her life in this story living on her own with little money, yet a suspenseful career. While she is living on her own, her finances and personal being are in the care of her lawyer. This corrupt attorney had a hidden agenda in his definition of taking care of someone. In return for allowing her to use her money at her own will, this lawyer makes Lisbeth perform incredibly inappropriate tasks that could easily anger and irritate any viewer. With this money she buys the equipment necessary to help solve the case of the woman that has been missing for at least forty years. Along this journey she meets an older man who also is a reporter on the case. This man is impressed by the photographic memory of Salander, and her ability to pick up on clues and facts. Mr. Bloomkvist, the older gentlemen reporter, has been talking to a friend of his that is trying to find out a mystery. His friend has been receiving hand draw photos of very rare flowers every year for the past forty years since his granddaughter went missing. Bloomkvist was working for a major newspaper company, that is currently competing with another important organization. He is given the opportunity to leave this timid and stressful environment, for one of the same kind. Only difference is, the facts he finds, and the story he comes across about his missing girl’s family is one of the most amazing stories he has ever seen. Bloomkvist along with his partner, Salander, were forced to go to one of the most frigid towns in the European empire. Altogether the movie was full of mystery, suspense, thrill, and excitement. The couple learned not only new things about the family they were investigating, they learned a lot about each other and themselves. Personally, I would strongly recommend a mature audience go see this movie. It would be definitely worth their time, and it might even encourage them to read the series. Bring friends, bring family; bring anyone that likes excitement and action. This movie is full of it!

  • War Horse - Movie Review

Posted by Movie Review at 2/29/2012
War Horse was a phenomenal movie that I suggest everyone should go see. This PG13 movie is perfect for boys and girls of all ages. It brought both tears and laughs to many of the viewers. War Horse is an inspiring movie that tells the journey of a horse as it lives through the hard years of World War One. This movie was far from boring and it was certainly not a waste of my money to see in theaters. This movie most definetly moved me and this 146 minute long movie was exciting, adventurous, and splendid from start to finish. Many of the famous actors in the movie, such as; Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Peter Mullan and Niels Arestrup, did a marvelous job as well as the famous horse. The director, Steven Spielberg, helped make War Horse win four stars and a top movie in the “Best and Worst of 2011.” If you seen this movie then you will certainly know why.

In this movie the chipmunks end up on a stranded island and learn the survival skills and learn they are strongest when they work together. This movie is great for families or young kids. Also back in this film are the Chipettes. The music is newer and well known. A great movie to go to if you want some fun, or some laughs. The chipmunks are sure to make you leave the theater smiling!

  • Chamber of Secrets: Review

    Posted by Staff at 2/29/2012
“Do you know anything about the Chamber of Secrets? -Yes. Can you tell me? -No… but I can show you.” For Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets I thought it would be fun to let you all in on some movie secrets and facts: The filming of this movie started a mere two days after the release of the first film. It was originally scripted that Hermione was to hug both Harry and Ron in the final scene. Emma Watson, the actress playing Hermione, was embarrassed about having to hug them in front of the entire cast so director Chris Columbus changed the scene. That is why in the film, Hermione just hugs Harry, and starts to hug Ron, but the two get embarrassed and shake hands instead. Emma Watson broke her left wrist while filming, so if you look carefully, you may be able to see the cast under her dress robes. Fourteen Ford Anglias were destroyed to create the scene where Harry and Ron crash into the Whomping Willow. Full-size models replaced the actors in scenes where their characters have been petrified. In order to create a realistic image of the floating set of needles (knitting in The Burrow), one of the crew coerced his mother to let them film her for several hours as she did her own knitting. Many Harry Potter fans went to see Scooby-Doo just to see a trailer for this film. The opal necklace, which plays an important role in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, can briefly be glimpsed inside a display case in Borgin and Burkes' shop in Knockturn Alley when Harry first enters. During the quidditch match, some of the music used while Harry and Draco chase the Golden Snitch was used during the speeder chase scene in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. John Williams did both scores.

  • Too Broke For Christmas

Posted by Staff too broke at 1/4/2012 2:00:00 PM
Too Broke for Christmas? Homemade gifts are always cheap!
-Coupon book: This is an oldie, but still a great personalized gift. Depending on what the recipient enjoys you can customize the book. Include service things like breakfast in bed, a day of help, and a night off. I suggest you put an expiration date to help motivate the recipient to use the coupons. If they have not used the coupon in a few weeks, give them a call and (lovingly) force them to use one.
-Scrapbook/scrapbook calendar: Find some pictures that have special meaning for you and the gift recipient. Neatly and creatively compile those pictures into a scrapbook. You could even go to your nearest Hobby Lobby and for about $10 buy a blank calendar. Use your scrapbook skills to custom design your own calendar.
-Paint or draw a picture: The picture could be of a favorite memory, favorite place, or anything sentimental. If you specialize in a type of drawing or painting, make some personalized pictures for friends and family.
-Create a CD mix with some of the recipient’s favorite songs: You could even put a group of CDs together with favorites from different decades or stages of your relationship.
-Organize a family experience: Take the family somewhere extra special. I’m not necessarily talking about a trip to Disney. It could even be to take the family for a day of sledding or skiing. How about a trip to the farm for a sleigh ride? Consider substituting gifts with a vacation or family activity.
-Homemade recipe book: Collect all your favorite recipes or even the recipes of friends and relatives and give the book to someone who loves to cook.
-Write a poem: While roses are red, you might be better off breaking the mould and writing something a little more original. Don’t write poetry? Get a book on how to write poetry (from the library) and follow the format. Some nice paper really helps compliment kind words.

There are three necessary ingredients for the “perfect Christmas gift”.
    1. A Skill
You have hundreds of skills, just think about how that skill can be used to focus on or honor someone else.
    2. Spare Time
This is this is the main reason people do not do homemade gifts. The gift card is so much easier. How often have you come up with a great idea, and then just simply didn’t have the time to get your act together? By deciding what you are going to give for Christmas now, you will have the necessary time to get it ready.
    3. Creativity
Anyone can buy a gift card. Who really needs another basket of soaps? Creativity helps you get the perfect gift. However, many people claim they are not creative enough to come up with a good idea. But, now you have no excuses.
What are you waiting for? There must be a least one great Christmas gift idea for you. Don’t delay or else you are going to be heading out on December 24th for a gift card.

    One Eyed Jacks Review
Tucked away in Lockport, a best kept secret is One Eyed Jacks, where they serve authentic smokehouse BBQ.  This restaurant is best known for its smoked chicken wings and its signature wings sauces like honey garlic, sticky bourbon, and raspberry.  At this casual eatery, you’re surrounded by the aroma of slow cooked BBQ and collections of beer bottles, assortments of license plates, and other memorabilia.  I ordered their BBQ Pulled Pork and was impressed by the hand pulled meat and how much flavor was included.  With most dinners, there are choices of abundant side dishes including fries, baked potatoes, coleslaw, and apple sauce.

    Breaking Dawn: Movie Review
On November 18th, many Team Edwards or Team Jacobs, maybe even just plain Twihards were in theaters at the midnight or many showings during opening weekend of the new Twilight movie. The final book by Stephanie Meyer was split into two seperate movies: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Part 2. Is this a movie worth to see? Some say it is the best movie in the Twilight saga yet and others have just lost interest since it has been almost a year since Eclipse, (the third movie in the Twilight saga was released). When I went to see it, I was pleased and it was worth the money I spent for a ticket. I agree with what people have said about it being the best Twilight movie yet. I liked it a lot; however, I do not see the reason for splitting the movie into two parts. The 2nd part is not planned to come out until next Novemeber. This may cause the loss of interest in many fans as they wait for the final Twilight movie to be released.
