GRADES K-2 TECHNOLOGY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  1. Illustrate and communicate original ideas and stories through process writing using digital tools and media-rich resources.

Below are the district-wide and across grade level approaches to teaching electronic writing desired in our classrooms.
  • Any writing task can be completed by using electronic tools.
  • During writer’s workshop, a small group of students are selected each week to compose one piece on the computer.  This still might be an illustration, random letters i.e. emerging writer’s characteristics.  Each week, a new group of students are rotated to create an “electronic” composition.
  • The expectation is frequent and ongoing experiences throughout the school year.
  • Students would use Kidspiration to gather ideas in the graphic organizer, switch to outline, and review their details.
  • Students are exposed to the spell check underline as a clue.
Research proves that ongoing opportunities to write electronically will increase their typing skills, improve editing, create longer writing pieces, teach spelling and improve the retention of technology skills.

  1. Engage in collaborative learning activities with learners from multiple cultures. (May be through electronic means, usually the teacher conducts the electronic communications).

At this grade range, the focus is to have a conversation with students of another culture or place in the world; the projects would most likely be a whole class activity.  Students should participate in at least one experience of this type each year.
